I’ve often wondered what it was like – having your finger on the nuclear trigger. Mostly because we have a good friend who was a human button, whose finger has been there, on the Colt 45 trigger, and who may well be responsible one day soon for giving those chilling orders if things get so bad that the total destruction of our humanity is the only solution.
Now I can imagine it, thanks to a Radio 4 programme broadcast this evening. It made me shiver, shudder, gave me goose pimples, listening to the interviews with those who have held responsibility for our nuclear deterrent, and hearing what it would sound like at the end of the world. The click, and then the silence.
